For the past six years, I’ve had the privilege of mentoring a remarkable young girl named Aurora through Big Brothers Big Sisters. When we were first matched, Aurora was struggling with self-worth, isolation, and trauma. Over the years, we’ve shared laughter, tears, and countless memories—cooking, cycling, sewing, and simply being there for each other.

One of the most profound moments was when she trusted me enough to open up about a painful story from her past. With my help, she accessed counselling and started taking the courageous first steps toward healing. Aurora has blossomed into a confident young woman.

Just like Aurora, many children in our community are in need of support from consistent, caring relationships. When young people are exposed to adversities like trauma and mental health challenges, a trusted adult in their lives can mean everything. Our programs connect these youth with mentors who help guide them through life’s challenges and realize their full potential.

Youth participation in our programs has nearly doubled in the past year alone. While demand is rising, available funding is declining – when families are in need of more support than ever. Right now, there are more than 150 children on our waitlist, hoping to be matched with a mentor. Over the past year, we supported more youth than ever before – and the need is still great.
